OBVERSE

Obverse:  Volodymyr the Great, Grand Duke of Kyiv (980-1015) at right. During his rule a rise of the Kyivan Rus as a solid community and a great power started off and all the Eastern Slavic lands were united under the dominion of Kyiv. In 988-989 Rus was Christianized on his initiative.  Ukrainian text.
Reverse:  Greek columns and doorway to ruins of Chersonesus.  In medieval Greek contracted to Cherson is an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2,500 years ago in the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula. The colony was established in the 6th century BC by settlers from Heraclea Pontica. Banknote
